Major Chauhan is a hard soldier who puts his commandos through punishing training, because he is preparing them for the enemy at the border. Peter D’Souza, his favourite trainee, finishes at the top of the course, is then shot through the legs on an operation, is crippled for life and returns to civilian life. When the young man is killed in broad daylight by thugs demanding protection money from his shop, the major’s definition of the enemy changes; the border is not outside, and the battlefield is now his own city. The first half of the film is given over entirely to that training, which is why the violence of the second half lands somewhere else. Nana Patekar wrote the film, directed it with Subhankar Ghosh and played the lead, and he went through real commando training before the shoot. Madhuri Dixit and Dimple Kapadia are also in the hundred and sixty six minute Indian film, completed in 1991.
