Preparations to Be Together for an Unknown Period of Time

Márta is a forty-year-old neurosurgeon. She leaves her career in America and returns to Budapest, because she has agreed to meet a fellow doctor she met at a conference on the Liberty Bridge. He does not come. When she finds him, he says they have never met. From there the film locks onto a single question: which of them is remembering wrongly. Lili Horvát is in no hurry to resolve that uncertainty. Márta's profession is the brain itself; she is the one person who could interrogate her own memory clinically. The telling is cool and orderly, like its protagonist, with a continuous effort at control instead of any emotional outburst. Natasa Stork carries that control and the crack underneath it at once. The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival in 2020 and was Hungary's submission to the Academy Awards. Who it's for: Viewers who like psychological mysteries, unreliable narration, and calmly constructed European drama. Who it's not for: The film does not state an answer and the pace is slow. The ending will feel unsatisfying if you want certainty.
