George S. Irving What Raggedy Ann & Andy: A Musical Adventure Is About
Richard Williams's 1977 animated film follows the rag dolls living in a child's nursery as they set out to rescue a kidnapped French doll. The figures they meet on the way grow steadily stranger; a giant creature living in a taffy pit who cannot stop eating, and a sea monster chasing its own tail, take it well outside the expectations of a children's film. Its real importance lies in animation history: Williams brought together master animators, among them Tissa David and Art Babbitt, with a young crew. The production overran its schedule and budget, parts of it were rushed, and the film failed at the box office. It is now remembered as one of the most lavish examples of hand-drawn animation. Who it's for: viewers interested in animation history and hand-drawn technique. Who it's not for: anyone wanting an orderly children's film, or not reckoning that its strange and unsettling scenes may disturb young children.
