What Rangi Taranga Is About
Anup Bhandari's first film was made for about fifteen million rupees and took more than four hundred million at the box office, which made it a turning point for Kannada cinema abroad. A reclusive novelist and his wife move back to her ancestral village, a journalist follows them there, and strange things begin to happen. Bhandari builds the dread out of a local legend and a buried past rather than out of cheap shocks. The whole structure depends on having the audience look in the wrong direction from the start, so the plot is best left unopened here. It won a long list of prizes, among them a Karnataka State Award and a Filmfare South award for direction.
