What Real Time Is About
Randall Cole's film puts Andy, a compulsive gambler who cannot pay what he owes, into the same car as Reuben, the man hired to kill him. Before doing the job Reuben grants him an hour and lets him spend it however he wants. The film runs exactly as long as that hour, unfolding in real time with the clock genuinely running. The structure holds comedy and threat up at once, since what Andy wants to do with his last hour is both ridiculous and hopeless. Randy Quaid plays the hitman and Jay Baruchel the debtor, and the whole weight of the film rests on the odd courtesy between them. The ending is left unspoiled.
