What Redeemer Is About
Célio Rocha believes God has given him a task: to persuade Otávio Sabóia, his friend from childhood, to give away everything he owns to the poor. Otávio made his money in construction, is mixed up in corruption, and has no intention whatever of doing any such thing. Célio will not let it go all the same. Cláudio Torres's Brazilian film mixes a religious story with comedy and elements of fantasy. Pedro Cardoso and Miguel Falabella take the leads, with Fernanda Montenegro and Camila Pitanga in the cast. The telling neither exalts faith nor mocks it; the real question is whether Célio was actually called or has talked himself into it. The answer is left open.
