What Return to Dust Is About
In rural northwestern China, Ma and Cao, both treated as burdens by their families, are married off to each other. Neither has anyone else, and to survive they have to work together and build their own house with their own hands. Over time a bond neither of them expected takes hold. Li Ruijun makes the rhythm of farming the rhythm of the film: sowing, harvest, mud bricks, eggs under a lamp. He neither prettifies the poverty nor asks for pity, and tells it instead through the care two people show each other. Wu Renlin, not a professional actor, plays Ma.
