Revenge

Yermek Shinarbayev's 1990 film begins with a teacher killing one of his pupils in a fit of rage. The dead girl's father raises another boy to take revenge. That single purpose is what the child's whole life is built around, and the film is about what carrying such a task does to the person who carries it. The screenplay is by Anatoli Kim, and the story draws on the experience of the Korean community deported to Central Asia. Shinarbayev delivers one of the harshest works of the Kazakh new wave: long silences, wide empty landscapes, no relief in any scene. The satisfaction found in most revenge narratives is entirely absent. Revenge is shown not as a resolution but as a burden handed down between generations. The film was later restored and returned to circulation. Who it's for: viewers open to post-Soviet Central Asian cinema and to slow, heavy narrative. Who it's not for: viewers wanting action or a satisfying reckoning; the film refuses both deliberately.
