Rewind

Sasha Joseph Neulinger's 2019 documentary is built on an archive of his own childhood. His father filmed constantly with a video camera and hundreds of hours accumulated in the house, and as an adult Neulinger watched all of it. The footage shows a cheerful family life, while during that period he was being sexually abused by relatives, and there are signs of it in the recordings. The documentary lays those two layers over each other: the smile in front of the camera and what was happening in those days. The film shows abuse repeating inside a family across generations and follows the legal process. Neulinger speaks with his family from the present. The account is measured and avoids exposure. Who it's for: viewers who can take personal documentary and accounts of confronting abuse. Who it's not for: anyone who would rather not approach child sexual abuse; the film is about it from beginning to end.
