What Road Is About
Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man are among the few places where motorcycles are raced on closed public roads, which makes the racing extraordinarily dangerous. The Dunlop family dominated it for twenty years. Joey Dunlop won world titles in succession and his brother Robert raced the same roads. Both of them died racing. Then Robert's sons, Michael and William, went out onto those same roads. Dermot Lavery and Michael Hewitt's BBC documentary is narrated by Liam Neeson. The film tries to ask why the speed cannot be given up, and takes its answer from the family themselves. That narrow ground between grief and carrying on is what the documentary is really about.
