Rolling Family

Emilia is eighty, a niece is getting married, and the whole family piles into an old motorhome for a journey of hundreds of kilometres into northern Argentina. The longer the trip runs the smaller the vehicle gets, as old quarrels, money, jealousy and the question of who owes whom come out. Pablo Trapero shot almost all of it inside and around the camper, keeping the frame tight and crowded throughout. Emilia is played by the director's own grandmother, Graciana Chironi, which pushes the texture toward documentary. Nothing builds to a major event; the question is whether what holds a family together is love or habit. Who it is for: viewers who like Argentine cinema and realist family portraits. Who it is not for: anyone wanting a defined story, since this is a record of a journey.
