What Rom Is About
Rom is fourteen and runs numbers for an illegal lottery in Ho Chi Minh City; he tells the people in his neighbourhood which number will come up and takes a cut from whoever wins. He lives in an apartment block waiting to be demolished, among people who have as little as he does. His parents left him on a street corner and all he wants is to put together enough money to find them. The film is almost entirely a run; the camera goes with the boy through narrow streets, across roofs and up stairwells. Tran Thanh Huy worked on it over a span of years, and the production won the New Currents award at Busan. The seventy nine minute Vietnamese film was completed in 2020.
