Dan Gilroy announced the project in August 2016 as Inner City; the name changed in June 2017. He brought the Nightcrawler crew, Robert Elswit on camera, his twin brother John Gilroy cutting, James Newton Howard scoring. It is Gilroy’s second feature as director, and Denzel Washington is credited on it as a producer too. After Toronto the film was re-edited. Roughly 12 minutes came out, a whole subplot went, and a key scene for Colin Farrell’s character moved forward out of the third act. The version festival audiences saw is not the one that reached cinemas. Washington put on weight for the part and, by Gilroy’s account, wore shoes too big for him, to make the man heavy and easy to overlook. Roman earns 500 dollars a week at a two partner office, and the film’s tension sits between that figure and the offer from the large firm. Against a 22 million dollar budget it took 13 million. Washington was nominated at the Oscars, the Golden Globes and the SAG Awards, and won none. A good fit if you want a character study that refuses to make its lead likeable and carries one mistake to its end. Not for anyone waiting on a courtroom duel; even the shooting in it is implied rather than shown.
