What Rosemary Is About
Rolf Thiele's 1958 German film starts from the real case of Rosemarie Nitribitt, found dead in her Frankfurt flat in 1957. The Rosemarie of the film is someone who, like everyone else in the years of the economic miracle, wants her share; through her relationships with men of the industrial class she begins selling the business secrets she overhears. When the scandal breaks, it becomes clear how easily the system can swallow her. The film aims not at the woman but at the circle that used her and then disposed of her, an open satire on the double morality of postwar Germany. Nadja Tiller leads, with Gert Fröbe and Mario Adorf in support. It showed in Venice and took the Golden Globe for best foreign film the following year.
