Saamy

Hari's 2003 Tamil film puts Vikram on screen as a policeman who takes bribes and does business with politicians. The character starts as the exact inverse of the genre's usual honest hero: he bargains, he looks away, he takes his share. His relationship with the woman played by Trisha becomes the break that forces him to face what he has been doing. Hari's directorial signature is clear here: fast cutting, a camera in constant motion, scenes joined together with almost no room to breathe. That pace is both the film's strength and its limit. The action is heavy and loud, and the fights make no claim to realism. The film is counted among the works that reshaped the police figure in Tamil cinema, and a sequel, Saamy Square, followed in 2018. Vikram carries the character's turn gradually rather than resting it on a single scene. Who it's for: those who enjoy 2000s Tamil action and hero-transformation narratives. Who it's not for: viewers who want the violence dialled down and the telling calm; this film runs loud in both pace and force.
