Elle Marja is fourteen, the daughter of a reindeer-herding Sami family. In 1930s Sweden she is sent to a boarding school set aside for Sami children, forbidden to speak her own language, while visiting scientists measure the pupils' skulls and photograph them naked. She wants another life, and the price of it is her name, her language and her family. Amanda Kernell's film is about how shame is taught. The Sami are the indigenous people of Sápmi, which runs across northern Scandinavia into Russia. The scenes of racist humiliation are explicit.
