What San Giovanni decollato Is About
Mastro Antonio Miciaccio is a caretaker and shoemaker with a fierce devotion to John the Baptist. When he notices that the oil keeping the saint's lamp lit has been going missing, he appoints himself to catch the thief. He also disapproves of the young man his daughter wants to marry, and does everything he can think of to stop the wedding. Amleto Palermi's 1940 comedy comes from Nino Martoglio's Sicilian-dialect play. What holds it together is Totò's timing: the man's unshakeable certainty about his own rectitude walks him into fresh trouble in every scene. It counts as one of Totò's first real successes on screen.
