Sandakozhi

N. Linguswamy's 2005 Tamil film follows Balu on a visit to his friend's home town. There he is drawn to his friend's sister Hema and comes up against Kaasi, who controls the district. The second half turns on revenge. Kaasi is a man no one in his own village opposes; Balu's intervention reopens an old blood feud and the violence ties back to a family history. Vishal and Meera Jasmine lead, with Rajkiran as the father in one of the film's most cited performances. The narrative follows the commercial Tamil pattern, with fight sequences and songs taking wide space. Who it's for: those who like Tamil action drama. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a narrative that questions violence; the film ties its resolution entirely to force.
