What Sarah's Oil Is About
Oklahoma at the start of the twentieth century. A young Black girl is allotted a stretch of dry land nobody expects anything from. She believes there is oil under it and she is right, and then she has to hold on to it against both the brokers circling her and the legal machinery that appointed guardians over wealthy children and managed their fortunes for them. The story is real: Sarah Rector was born in 1902, received her land through the allotment of Creek freedmen, struck oil in 1913, and became rich enough that Oklahoma declared her legally white.
