What Sasha Is About
Sasha's mother dreams of her son becoming a great pianist. Sasha's mind is elsewhere: his piano teacher Mr Weber says he is leaving town for good, and the boy is devastated. The only person he can talk to about it is his closest friend, Jiao. In his family, which came from the former Yugoslavia, and especially around his father, being open is not possible, and it suits him that everyone assumes Jiao is his girlfriend. The lie grows, and when his younger brother actually starts seeing Jiao it all comes apart. Dennis Todorović's film turns the material into neither a tragedy nor a piece of advocacy. The father is homophobic but not one-dimensional, and the family does not dissolve so much as rearrange itself. Being gay inside an immigrant family in Germany is told here without pity and without mockery.
