What Sass Is About
Franz and Erich Sass are two brothers who grew up poor. In Berlin they become expert at cracking safes and pull off one robbery after another. Before long the city knows them; the police are looking for them and part of the public follows them with interest. What they do draws the attention of the newspapers. While the detective on their trail follows them, the brothers get deeper into criminal circles. The film neither makes heroes of the two nor shows them only as criminals. The Berlin of the twenties and thirties holds a place of its own in the account. The hundred and twenty seven minutes are given to the rise of the two brothers. Ben Becker and Jürgen Vogel take the leads, with Otto Sander also in the cast. Carlo Rola’s German film was completed in 2001.
