Saturday Night

The ninety minutes before the first live broadcast of a television programme in 1975. The set is unfinished, the script is not approved, and nobody knows whether the show will go out. The film moves almost in real time with the camera constantly in corridors; the narrative builds no single hero and takes the crowd itself as its subject. The producers themselves noted that liberties were taken with the chronology. Jason Reitman directed and wrote the screenplay. Gabriel LaBelle leads a large ensemble. Who it's for: those interested in backstage narratives and the history of that show. Who it's not for: viewers who do not know who anyone is; the film spends no time introducing them.
