What Savage Hunt of King Stakh Is About
At the end of the nineteenth century a young ethnographer, Andrei Bielaretski, comes to a remote part of the Belarusian forests to collect local legends. The young woman he meets at the castle where he is staying tells him that an old family curse is waiting for her next. Whether the band of mounted hunters that appears over the plain at night is a real curse or a fear built by human hands, the film keeps open for a long time. Adapted from a novel by Uladzimir Karatkevich, the production is counted among the films in which Soviet cinema came closest to gothic horror. Boris Plotnikov appears in Valery Rubinchik’s hundred and thirty four minute film, completed in 1979.
