What Saviors in the Night Is About
In Westphalia in 1943, Marga Spiegel, her husband and her daughter are about to be deported. Farmers in the region help the Jewish family: they take Marga and her daughter in under false names and hide her husband. What follows is a story of decisions made again every day; the people helping will share the same fate if they are caught. The film presents the rescue not as a miracle but as a risk taken on by ordinary people. It was adapted from what Marga Spiegel wrote about it herself. Veronica Ferres plays the lead in Ludi Boeken’s ninety five minute German film, completed in 2009.
