What Seagulls Die in the Harbour Is About
The film follows a man walking through a port city who cannot be at ease. He moves among the crowd, attaches himself to nobody and tells nobody what is troubling him. The only people who meet him with understanding are an orphaned child and two women who have given up hope. Rather than building a crime story, the account looks at how the city swallows the man; the black and white images use light harshly and turn the setting into a kind of state of mind. It came to be counted among the notable works of Belgian cinema in the fifties. Ivo Michiels, Rik Kuypers and Roland Verhavert made this ninety four minute film together, completed in 1955.
