What Secret Name Is About
Nelie is a poor young woman who has escaped destitution by nursing at the front in 1914. When Rose, a girl from a good family, dies in front of her, Nelie takes her papers and presents herself in her place at the house of the wealthy Madame de Lengwil, hired as her reader. The lie holds, and her life gets better. Then it turns out that the girl she buried in her mind is not dead. Aurélia Georges moves Wilkie Collins's 1873 novel The New Magdalen to the Vosges under German occupation. Lyna Khoudri takes the stolen name, Sabine Azéma owns the house, and the film treats good manners as a class language that only one of them had to learn.
