What Seven Waves Away Is About
Richard Sale's 1957 film is adapted from his own 1938 short story. A liner goes down in seven minutes and twenty-seven people take refuge in a lifeboat built for nine. With a storm coming, the officer in charge of the boat, Alec Holmes, faces one calculation: if everybody stays, nobody survives. What follows is a film in which somebody has to decide who stays, and in which the person deciding has to live with it afterwards. The story bears a resemblance to the real sinking of the William Brown in 1841. Tyrone Power leads. It offers no easy answer and vindicates nobody who claims to have one.
