Shahjahan

Ravi Appulu's 2001 Tamil film follows a young man who helps two lovers and only later understands that the woman his friend loves is the one he loves himself. The film puts that sacrifice at its centre. He tells no one and goes on smoothing the way for his friend; the narrative follows the commercial Tamil form and sets fight and song sequences between its scenes. Vijay leads, with Vivek carrying the comic line. The tone is light and the close emotional. Who it's for: those who like popular Tamil cinema of the early two thousands. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a new story; the film repeats a familiar shape.
