What Shinsengumi: Assassins of Honor Is About
Toward the end of the nineteenth century power in Japan is passing from the shogunate to the emperor, and not everyone is content about it. The Shinsengumi, an outfit made of samurai, farmers and peasants, comes together to stand against the direction of history. Their leader Isami Kondo went from farmer to fighter to head of the brigade, and he runs his men with a hard hand. Toshiro Mifune plays him in Tadashi Sawashima's 1969 film. The account presents the Shinsengumi as neither purely heroic nor purely murderous, and it includes the cracks and the betrayals inside a group that fights knowing it will lose. One of the most filmed subjects of the bakumatsu, carried here by Mifune's weight.
