Ship of Theseus

Ship of Theseus is director Anand Gandhi's feature debut, a philosophical Indian film weaving together three separate stories about the ethical and aesthetic dilemmas of an experimental photographer, an intellectual monk, and a young stockbroker. The film premiered at the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, where it was called a hidden gem of the year. In 2013, it won the Transilvania Trophy for Best Film at the 12th Transilvania International Film Festival along with a 15,000 euro cash prize, with cinematographer Pankaj Kumar winning Best Cinematography at the same festival. The film won Best Feature Film at India's 61st National Film Awards. It opened in limited release in India on July 19, 2013, presented by Kiran Rao (Aamir Khan's wife) in collaboration with UTV Motion Pictures. Who it's for: anyone curious about a low budget, philosophically dense independent Indian film that proved it could reach international recognition, later named Best Film at India's own National Film Awards. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a single linear story, since the film weaves together three separate narratives.
