What Shut Up and Play the Piano Is About
The documentary follows Chilly Gonzales from the Canada he was born in to the Berlin underground of the late nineties, and from there by way of Paris to the great philharmonic halls. What we are looking at is a man who declares himself a megalomaniac on stage and folds his own self doubt into the same act. He is a pianist who moves between rap and electronic music and has also opened the door of classical music, and who has left his mark on a list running from Daft Punk to Drake. The film treats these two faces not as separate things but as the two sides of one coin. The distance between the person on stage and the person at the piano is what it is really about. Philipp Jedicke’s eighty one minute documentary was completed in 2018.
