Shyam Singha Roy

Shyam Singha Roy, directed by Rahul Sankrityan, follows a present day aspiring director who, under hypnosis, discovers he's the reincarnation of Shyam Singha Roy, a communist reformer who lived in Kolkata between 1969 and 1977; made on a budget of 500 million rupees, it opened on December 24, 2021. Shyam Singha Roy isn't a real historical figure but a wholly fictional character inspired by Bengal's real social reform and literary history. The film grossed 650 million rupees, becoming 2021's seventh highest grossing Telugu film. Nani and Sai Pallavi won Best Actor and Best Actress in the Critics categories at the Filmfare Awards. Who it's for: anyone curious about a commercially successful Telugu drama where the lead actor plays a dual role, moving between the present and 1970s Kolkata through a reincarnation theme. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a short film set in a single time period, since this shifts between two distinct eras.
