What Siddhartha Is About
Siddhartha, a young Brahmin, leaves home to look for a life worth living. The road takes him through severe asceticism, then through sensual pleasure, material wealth and self disgust, and the wholeness he was after only appears somewhere else entirely, at the end. Conrad Rooks made the film in 1972 from Hermann Hesse's novel. Shashi Kapoor plays Siddhartha, with Simi Garewal alongside. It was shot in the middle of the West's seventies fascination with the East, and watching now you can see both the curiosity and the shortcuts that came with it.
