Sigappu Rojakkal

Bharathiraja's 1978 Tamil film follows Dileep, a businessman. He appears calm and respectable and conceals the killings of women. When he marries Sarada the film changes its point of view. The narrative traces the killer's reasons to his childhood and makes his wife's realisation the centre of the tension; the close is in her hands. Kamal Haasan and Sridevi lead. The film was considered unusual in Tamil cinema of the period and was argued over. The images and music carry the tension. Who it's for: viewers of classic Tamil thrillers. Who it's not for: viewers for whom the killing of women would be difficult to watch.
