What Sir! No Sir! Is About
The documentary is about the anti-war movement that grew inside the American military during the Vietnam War. Soldiers sit before the camera and say why they opposed it: what they saw at the front, the difference between this and the war their fathers described, the treatment of black soldiers, and what happened to those who refused orders. The coffeehouses opened near the bases, the newspapers the soldiers produced and the courts martial are each shown; the movement was largely forgotten afterwards. The tour for soldiers that Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland took part in is inside the account as well. David Zeiger’s eighty five minute American documentary gathers the movement in the words of those who were in it; it was completed in 2005.
