Sandra Laing was born in 1955 in South Africa to white Afrikaner parents. Her skin was dark and her hair was different, an inheritance from distant ancestry. The apartheid state classified her as Coloured. At ten she was expelled from the whites-only boarding school her brother attended. Her father Abraham fought the ruling in the courts and the case became an international matter. Sandra spent the rest of her life dealing with how the state and the people around her had classified her. Anthony Fabian directs, adapting Judith Stone's book. Sophie Okonedo plays the adult Sandra, with Alice Krige and Sam Neill as her parents.
