Slay

A booking error puts four drag performers somewhere they did not expect: in the provinces, taking the stage in front of a crowd with no interest in their show. The night starts badly. Then vampires attack the venue. There is nowhere to run, and the audience that just shut them out now looks to the four on stage for help. Jem Garrard's film combines genre comedy with drag culture. The narrative does not break the familiar rules of vampire films; it only changes who the hero is. Costumes, wigs and heels are used as weapons, and the film does this without taking itself seriously. The cast includes performers known from RuPaul's Drag Race: Trinity the Tuck, Heidi N Closet, Crystal Methyd and Cara Melle. Who it's for: Viewers who like drag culture, camp horror comedy, and low-budget genre film. Who it's not for: The production quality is low and the effects are weak. The humour is also very much for its audience and may mean nothing from outside.
