So I Married an Axe Murderer

A man in San Francisco who reads poetry and finds an excuse to leave every relationship meets a woman who works in a butcher's shop. This time he does not want to run. Then a suspicion about her past appears. The film builds it not as a thriller but as the latest excuse he has found for his own habit of leaving; the narrative keeps whether the suspicion is justified unresolved for a long time. Thomas Schlamme directed. Mike Myers leads and also plays the father; the Scottish family scenes are what the film is remembered for. It flopped on release and became a cult film later. Who it's for: those who like the odd romantic comedies of the nineteen-nineties. Who it's not for: viewers wanting a consistent genre; the film keeps moving between comedy and thriller.
