Viktoriya Fanasyutina's 2019 Russian film is based on the story of a real child. Sergei Aleshkov was six years old in 1942; after his house was burned he was left alone in the forest and was found days later, exhausted, by a reconnaissance party. Rather than send him to an orphanage the regiment kept him, and an officer adopted him. Aleshkov came to be remembered as the youngest soldier of the Second World War, and at the end of 1942 he was wounded in the leg under mortar fire. The film builds all of this in the language of the Russian patriotic narrative. What is being told is a story of heroism, and it is also a six-year-old at the front.
