Something Something… Unakkum Enakkum

Mohan Raja's 2006 Tamil film opens with an interrogation in a prison. Muthupandi tells his past: a self-made man devoted to his sister, and what happened to his family. The film is a remake of a Telugu production, and Mohan Raja was known for such adaptations in this period. The narrative shifts rapidly between comedy, family drama and action; the pace is high and the coherence weak. The pairing of Trisha and Ravi Mohan supplies the commercial side. The elder brother played by Prabhu is the emotional centre, and the best passages are the ones around him. The music entered the popular songs of its moment. Who it's for: those who like 2000s mainstream Tamil cinema. Who it's not for: viewers expecting a consistent genre; the film changes tone entirely from scene to scene.
