Sounds of Sand

On one side is the desert eating into the land, an endless dry season and no water. On the other is the threat of war. The village well has run dry and the livestock is dying. Most of the villagers follow their instinct and head south. Rahne decides to head east instead, with his wife Mouna and their three children. All they own is a few sheep, some goats and a dromedary named Chamelle. Drought, borders and armed groups meet them along the way. The film tells the migration not as an escape but as a search. Issaka Sawadogo and Carole Karemera appear in Marion Hänsel’s ninety six minute film, a joint Belgian, Djiboutian, French and German production, completed in 2007.
