Southern Chronicles

Ignas Miskinis's 2025 Lithuanian film is set in a northern industrial town in the post-Soviet nineties. Rimants is more interested in rugby, music and black market dealing than in school; when he falls in love with Monika all his assumptions about the future are tested. The film shows the period as a transition. Factories are closing, money loses value daily, and for the young the choice between studying and earning quickly is not clear. Rimants's indecision is the personal form of that uncertainty. The narrative is episodic and the humour local; observations of adolescence come with the detail of the period. It is adapted from a novel and the everyday register of the language is kept. Who it's for: those who like Baltic cinema and narratives of the nineties transition. Who it's not for: viewers without the context; many of the references are specific to Lithuania at that time.
