What Southern District Is About
In La Paz, unlike most cities, the rich live down below, and that lower ground is the Southern District of the title. Days pass without major mishap in a large house ringed by a beautiful garden, where a mother, her three children and the household’s Aymara staff share one roof while living in separate worlds. Juan Carlos Valdivia refuses to force the drama or push it along with plot devices; his camera turns slowly through the rooms, watches the ordinary business of the day, and waits for pressure from inside and outside to burst the bubble of comfort. The hundred and eight minute Bolivian film tracks the last days of an upper class family as the country changes around it, and it won both the directing and the screenwriting award in the world cinema section at Sundance in 2010.
