What Sparkle Is About
Three sisters singing in a Harlem church choir at the end of the fifties turn into a girl group with a name in sixties soul, and the further the group rises the further the three lives inside it drift apart. Sam O'Steen, by then one of the most sought after editors in Hollywood, directed it. When it opened in 1976 it was not a commercial success, and what lasted instead was the music: Curtis Mayfield wrote and produced the songs, Aretha Franklin sang them on an album released that June, and Something He Can Feel went to number one on the R&B chart. It was Irene Cara's first film. A remake followed in 2012 with Jordan Sparks and Whitney Houston.
