What Star Trek III: The Search for Spock Is About
After Spock's death, Kirk learns that his friend's katra, his living spirit, is inside Doctor McCoy's mind. To bring body and spirit together on Vulcan they steal the decommissioned Enterprise. Waiting for them are Klingons after the Genesis technology. It is Leonard Nimoy's first film as director. Harve Bennett wrote the screenplay backwards: he set the closing line first, Spock saying your name is Jim, and then wrote the road to it. The script took six weeks. Christopher Lloyd plays the Klingon commander Kruge. Nimoy said he brought a welcome element of theatricality to the role. Its most shocking move is destroying the Enterprise, kept secret through extraordinary security during production. The sequence used several miniature models; the original 150,000 dollar model was not destroyed. On a 16 million dollar budget it grossed 87 million worldwide, 76.5 million of it domestic. Critics praised Nimoy's direction and the weight he gave the characters, and split on the plot and the effects. Who it is for: people following the series and anyone who wants what comes after The Wrath of Khan. Who it is not for: newcomers. It starts where the second film stopped and explains nothing.
