What Station West Is About
When two cavalrymen carrying a gold shipment are killed, John Haven of army intelligence arrives undercover in a mining and logging town to work out what happened. Who is in on it is not clear; the saloon singer, the gambling house, the sheriff and the miners all know something and nobody is saying it. Sidney Lanfield's film looks like a western but actually runs on noir logic: a lone man, a woman who cannot be trusted, a town where everybody lies. Its most striking feature is the dialogue, which is short, barbed and unusually sharp. Every exchange between Dick Powell's investigator and the woman Jane Greer plays moves like a duel. Agnes Moorehead is also in the cast.
