What Stevie Is About

Years after Hoop Dreams, Steve James turned his camera on rural southern Illinois and on Stevie Fielding, the troubled boy he had mentored as an Advocate Big Brother a decade earlier and then left behind. The man he finds has been battered by foster care, by his family and by his own temper, and James keeps having to account for his own share in the story. While filming continued, Stevie was charged with a serious offence against a young relative. James did not shut the project down. He stayed with the family, the childhood and the institutions that handled Stevie, excusing nobody and turning nobody into a monster, and leaving open the question of what a documentary maker owes the life he is recording.
