What Summer Is About

At the beginning of the twentieth century Joosep Toots returns to his village from Russia, where he has learned farming. He sets about improving his father’s farm, Ulesoo, by new methods. At the same time he is in a race with Kiir for Teele’s affection; Teele has said she will marry a farmer and nobody else, whereupon Kiir decides to go to Russia to learn farming too. The film gives village life with both comedy and seriousness and shows how the new seeps into the countryside. The account rests on a well known source in Estonian literature and assumes the viewer already knows its characters. Aare Laanemets and Riina Hein appear in Arvo Kruusement’s eighty minute Estonian film, completed in 1976.
