What Sunday Too Far Away Is About
A sheep station in the Australian outback, 1955. The world of the shearers is hard and competitive; Foley and Black Arthur compete for the position of top shearer, and the evenings go on beer. After weeks of work they find their bonus has been touched and that non-union labour is undercutting them, and from there the film hardens. Ken Hannam directed, with Jack Thompson in the lead. The story looks at the months leading up to the nine-month shearers’ strike of 1956. It took four major prizes at the Australian Film Awards in March 1975, was selected for Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes that May, and counts as the first international breakthrough of the Australian film revival.
