What Sunset: The Mystery of the Necklace of São Cajó Is About
Manuel Pureza's 2023 Portuguese film follows the wealthy Bourbon de Linhaça family. They own a very old necklace that carries a curse, a set of secrets and a recipe for salt cod. The film imitates the soap opera form and overplays it. Deaths, lost heirs and sudden recollections follow one another, and the narrative never once attempts to be serious. It comes from a television parody of the same name, and its audience knows it from there. The acting is deliberately overblown. The tone is humour throughout. Who it's for: those who know Portuguese television comedy and enjoy parody. Who it's not for: viewers who do not know the series; most of the jokes rest on it.
